Maria Sharapova: ‘The Beginning is one of the Most Important Parts of a Journey’

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova was interviewed on the ABC News’ “No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis” podcast and spoke about the worst advice she ever received from people – “it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”

The Russian strongly disagreed with that and says that a strong and clear beginning is necessary for a positive outcome in any field – sports or business. “The beginning is one of the most important parts of a journey …

“And so in my career, before you make that first step, you have to do so much due diligence. You have to put in so much work and effort, put in the right team, the frame of mind, and the hours of repetition in order to have a great beginning and the better the beginning, the better the end”.

In the podcast, the five-time Grand Slam champion says, “I have a clear path of what I want to achieve in the end, and no matter where I am at, the beginning of it, the middle of it, I always go back to ‘What was I thinking, what was my path? What was my thinking from the original starting point? And am I still on the same track?.”

Sharapova’s beliefs have undoubtedly paid off. She has been a World No. 1 in singles, a five-time Grand Slam champion, returned from a doping ban in the game, has written a New York Times bestselling book and runs her own premium candy line – Sugarpova.

A Simple Truth About Business Growth

We’ve all seen what happens when a business is poorly scaled. The cult restaurant adds more tables and loses its magic. The software is ruined when too many features are added. The bespoke tourist attraction becomes tacky.

Growth doesn’t come from looking for more opportunities to expand, it’s a result of finding better ways to serve. This doesn’t mean thinking small and staying small. It means being more thoughtful about the need to go bigger, instead of going big for the sake of being big.

“Don’t follow your passion. Seriously. Don’t follow your passion. Your passion is likely more dumb and useless than anything else. Your passion should be your hobby, not your work. Do it in your spare time.

Instead, at work, seek to contribute. Find the hottest, most vibrant part of the economy you can and figure out how you can contribute best and most. Make yourself of value to the people around you, to your customers and coworkers, and try to increase that value every day.

It can sometimes feel that all the exciting things have already happened, that the frontier is closed, that we’re at the end of technological history and there’s nothing left to do but maintain what already exists. This is just a failure of imagination. In fact, the opposite is true. We’re surrounded by rotting incumbents that will all need to be replaced by new technologies. Let’s get on with it.” – Marc Andreessen as told to Noah Smith.

Your Character Determines Your Destiny

Watch your thoughts; they lead to attitudes.
Watch your attitudes; they lead to words.
Watch your words; they lead to actions.
Watch your actions; they lead to habits.
Watch your habits; they lead to character.
Watch your character; it determines your destiny.

BE SMART

Want to know a billionaire’s rules for starting a business? Here’s what Blackstone CEO/Chairman Stephen A. Schwarzman calls his “three basic tests,” which he believes any new business must pass:

1. “Your idea has to be big enough to justify devoting your life to it. Make sure it has the potential to be huge.”

2. “It should be unique. When people see what you are offering, they should say to themselves, ‘My gosh, I need this. I’ve been waiting for this.’”

3. “Your timing must be right. The world actually doesn’t like pioneers, so if you are too early, your risk of failure is high. The market you are targeting should be lifting off with enough momentum to help make you successful.”

“Sometimes, success in life is knowing one’s limitations.” – Stephen A. Schwarzman
